Working in History

CREED63 is in the heart of pivotal American history. This building was originally built in 1920, for the U.S. Post Office, and was renamed in 1996 by Judge Helen Shores Lee to honor her father, Arthur Shores.

This building is a contributing structure to the Civil Rights District and the National Historic Monument District. In 1963, Reverends Martin Luther King, Jr. and Fred Shuttlesworth directed and organized boycotts and protests which centered on Kelly Ingram Park, which this property is adjacent to. Images from those confrontations, broadcast nationwide, created a public outcry which turned the nation's attention to the struggle for racial equality helping insure the passage of Civil Rights Laws and bringing an end to public segregation.

Arthur Shores was an attorney, Civil Rights activist & Birmingham City Council representative. He is known as “The Dean of lawyers.” He was Martin Luther King, Jr., attorney as well as the attorney for Fred Shuttlesworth & other protestors. Additionally, he was the attorney that argued before the United States Supreme Court to integrate The University of Alabama.
